Hike, Peoples State Forest, Barkhamsted, CT. Jeanne Delehanty 860-748-5858. Arrive by 12:15 PM. Hike steps off promptly at 12:30 PM (please be on time - it’s getting too cold to wait for late arrivals). Meet at the Matties Grove parking lot on East River Rd. From the junction of East River Rd and Rt 181, travel north on East River Rd for about 1 mile. Lot is on the left. The trails at People are some of the most challenging we encounter in CT. This is a LONG hike of over 6+ miles. The hike is a loop and includes long steady climbs (right from the beginning) and ascents and descents over rocky hilltops. You will be rewarded with stunning vistas at several overlook spots. THERE ARE NO BAILOUT OR TURN AROUND OPTIONS. Be prepared to complete the entire 6+ mile hike. Due to the challenging nature of the trails hiking shoes (not sneakers or running shoes) are a must. There is a picnic area with tables, grills and a pavilion adjacent to the parking lot for those interested in a socially distant apres. BYO Everything.
