This is a joint paddle with Shoreline Sailing Club. The launch here is from a sandy beach; there is plenty of parking, and once again, bonus points for a porta potty. This area is protected from waves and wind and is rated as a very easy and relaxing paddle. Loretta Spencer will be your co-host. We will first travel north as close to the dam as the water level will allow, then turn around and head to the wide bay about a mile south. Most will want to turn around here but the more adventurous can continue the extra three quarters of a mile to the Connecticut River. Arrive at 8:30 and launch at 9:00 so we can catch as much of the high tide as we can. Bring a life preserver, whistle, sunscreen, water, and a bathing suit, if you like. Post paddle lunch at Two Wrasslin' Cats Café, 374 Towns St., East Haddam, for those who would like to extend their stay.

Sunrise State Park is located at 121 East Haddam Rd., East Haddam. If you are traveling from the north, look for a white post on the right with 121 on it and turn right just before it. If you go past Machimoodus Park you have gone too far. If you are traveling from the south (i.e., Goodspeed Opera House), go past the entrance to Machimoodus State Park and take your next left just past the white post on the left with the 121 on it. Head up the hill (there will be fields on either side), and bear right past the buildings that remain from the old resort. Continue driving down a steep hill to the river and parking area. Although the road is paved, there are some big potholes and washouts so go slow.
